Manihiki Atoll Vacation Guide

Map of Manihiki Atoll and Lagoon
Map of Manihiki Atoll and Lagoon

The beautiful Manihiki atoll is one of the most beautiful in Cook Islands. Tourism is not extensive but accommodation is available, such as the Manihiki Lagoon Villas. Roughly triangular in shape, the lagoon has around 40 motu (coral islets) encircling the completely enclosed, shallow lagoon, which is some 4 km (2.5 miles) wide. There is a small airstrip accessed by a weekly Air Rarotonga service from the main island of Rarotonga, which is 750 miles to the south. Manihiki is a tropical hideaway, with friendly people, breathtaking turquoise lagoon views. The perfect holiday escape but note that this is not a 5-star resort destination.

Some of the main features and activities of Manihiki are as follows:

  • Manihiki is famous for its black pearls, which are a major export commodity of the Cook Islands. Tours out to the pearl beds are available and this is one of the most popular activities here.
  • Enjoy kayaking in this tropical Manihiki island retreat to explore the many small islets. There are motus around the perimeter of the lagoon as well as small ones in the lagoon centre.
  • The lagoon is perfect for snorkelling and swimming.
  • Scuba Diving is possible as the lagoon is blessed with many colourful coral reef fish.
  • Take a trip on the lagoon via a boat tour, for swimming, snorkeling, fishing. Lunchtime usually comprises barbecued fresh fish, tropical fruits and coconut.
  • Watch the the making of traditional woven 'rito' hats and other local items. Rito is obtained from the young shoots of coconut palm leaves, and is the traditional handicraft material for the people of Manihiki and neighbouring Rakahanga lagoon 42 km (26 miles) to the north.
  • A few local shops but limited range of products. No credit card facilities.

Manihiki's Polynesian ancestry dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. The first European to sight Manihiki was Captain Patrickson of the US ship 'Good Hope' in October 1822. He named it Humphrey Island.
